What Is National Skilled Nursing Care Week?

There is no better time than National Skilled Nursing Care Week, May 10 – 16, to honor the important role skilled nursing communities play in caring for America’s seniors. The week is a special time to recognize our residents, staff and the family members who make up the special blend of our wonderful community.

Established as an annual, weeklong observance by the American Health Care Association (AHCA) in 1967, NSNCW, formerly known as National Nursing Home Week, provides an opportunity to recognize the role of skilled nursing centers in caring for seniors.

This year’s theme is “Sharing Our Wisdom.” AHCA has suggestions to explore on how you might celebrate the week despite the limitations of social distancing.

Today’s skilled nursing care communities have evolved from simply providing excellent care for residents, to becoming engaging homes for senior living. Our community is filled with purposeful activities, social events, therapy programs, lively entertainment and nutritious dining.

What Is the Role of Skilled Nursing Care Communities?

Skilled nursing care centers like ours provide a higher level of care tailored to the individual needs of our residents. As a licensed health care community, we are inspected and regulated by the state’s Department of Public Health. We have nurses on staff 24 hours each day. Long- and short-term care is available for those who need rehabilitation services or suffer from serious or persistent health issues that are too complex for an assisted living level of care.

When Are Nursing Care Communities Necessary?

As a general rule, those residents in a skilled nursing community require around-the-clock nursing care and supervision. Their care goes beyond just assistance with eating, personal hygiene and medications due to their complex physical needs.

Advances in technology have allowed skilled nursing care communities like ours to use monitoring devices to alert staff when a resident is attempting to do something that could be dangerous.
